Phone anxiety

Is it just me that panics when I hear my phone ring?

(Well vibrate – does anyone actually have the speaker on in 2021…?)

I’ll grudgingly answer my phone if I have the number in my contacts, but if it’s unknown, I’m going to let it ring out. Then I’ll google the number. If it’s important they’ll leave a message, right?

I don’t know why I have this fear or where it started. I’ve always hated phone calls; when I was a child my mum used to have to force phone calls with my grandparents on me because I usually refused. You might think I’m rude because I don’t want to talk to people, but I do… just not on the phone.

Whether it’s the formality of phone calls that scares me; synonymous with setting up bills or organising the boring things of adult life or just the unknownness I don’t know.

I have always felt embarrassed by this, how can I possibly be a proper adult if I am this afraid of phone calls?

I don’t know how to get over this anxiety or whether it’s even a common thing to be afraid of. I think it’s something I’m going to have to get better at as I get older. Who knows, maybe I’ll even answer the phone to the next unknown number that calls me…
